# The Intergovernmental Authority on Development executive secretary, Workneh Gebeyehu, has highlighted the urgent need for Africa-based innovation at the UN General Assembly’s Science Diplomacy event. Gebeyehu noted Africa carries nearly one-quarter of the global disease burden but produces only less that five-percent of its health products. He warned reliance on imports is unsustainable and called for investment in African research, innovation, and production to meet the continent’s health needs:
