# Gunfire and explosions have been reported in several areas of Niger’s capital, Niamey, early this morning. Reuters witnesses described sustained gunfire and blasts across the city, but there has been no official word on the cause or any casualties. Niger has been under military rule since a July 2023 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. The government, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, has since distanced itself from Western allies and strengthened ties with Russia, alongside neighbouring military-led Mali and Burkina Faso.
