# The Glencore-Merafe Chrome Venture has extended the deadline for retrenchment consultations at its ferrochrome smelters to tomorrow. This follows a request from Eskom, which is working to finalise a 62-cents-per-kilowatt-hour electricity tariff deal aimed at preventing plant closures. The process affects approximately one-thousand-500 employees. Despite suspended operations at some smelters since April 2025, workers have continued receiving full pay amid negotiations. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa is reviewing tariff arrangements, as industry players warn high electricity costs threaten smelting operations and jobs.
