# The Public Servants Association is calling on the government to safeguard the hard-fought gains that are the foundation of the country’s democracy. This as today marks Freedom Day, the commemoration of the first democratic elections held in South Africa on 27 April 1994. The association’s, Claude Naiker, says true freedom, apart from political rights, entails ensuring that every South African has access to economic opportunities, quality public services, and a dignified livelihood:
