# Eskom has welcomed the Presidency’s first-phase electricity reform report and supports plans for an independent state-owned transmission system operator. The power utility has also welcomed efforts to reduce municipal debt, now standing at 119-billion-rand, describing it as vital to the utility’s long-term financial sustainability and energy security. Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena says the reforms must be implemented in a way that protects Eskom’s financial sustainability, meets lender obligations and avoids defaults.
