# The Department of Military Veterans is saddened by the passing of Lieutenant General Gilbert Lebeko Ramano. He served as the former Chief of the South African Army and senior uMkhonto weSizwe commander. Ramano was born in Sophiatown in 1939 and died on Sunday at the age 85. He played a key role in South Africa’s armed struggle and post-apartheid military integration. The department praised his legacy of discipline and passed condolences to the Ramano family as well as all who served with him.
