# Transport minister Barbara Creecy says rail transport is vital to strengthening regional trade, attracting investment and supporting industrialisation. Speaking as the Southern African Railways Association marks its 30th anniversary at the Sandton Convention Centre in Sandton, Johannesburg, Creecy highlighted the need for integrated cross-border transport networks. Eleven private rail operators have been approved to access the Transnet network from April 2027, with an expected additional 24-million tonnes of freight capacity. She also highlighted passenger rail efforts to shift freight from road to rail, reducing congestion and emissions.
