# The Competition Commission has released its first cost-of-living report, tracking household expenses from 2020 to this year. The report shows electricity and water prices have surged by 68-percent and 50-percent, respectively, well above the general inflation of 28-percent. Education costs also rose sharply, while internet and funeral expenses remained stable. Food prices, including eggs, maize meal, and sunflower oil, increased even though producer costs dropped. The commission’s Siyabulela Makunga says the report shows widening producer-to-retail price gaps, adding strain to household budgets.
