Civil society groups urge government to reject Israeli firm’s Orange Basin deal

# Civil society groups urge Mineral and Petroleum Resources minister Gwede Mantashe to reject a proposed deal involving an offshore oil block in the Orange Basin. The South African Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Coalition, Masifundise Development Trust, Natural Justice and the Climate Justice Coalition say the transfer of a 38-percent stake and control to Israeli company Navitas Petroleum could threaten fishing communities and the environment. The coalition’s Roshan Dadoo calls for proper public consultation and environmental assessment before any decision is made.
