# The Australian state of New South Wales will begin a major gun buyback programme in November, following the deadly Bondi Beach shooting. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the scheme will start on 2 November, with people eligible for up to one-thousand Australian dollars for each rifle or handgun surrendered. The programme forms part of tougher national gun laws introduced after the December attack, which killed 15 people at a Jewish festival in Sydney. It will be Australia’s biggest gun buyback since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, when 35 people were killed.
