# Action Society says the acquittal of the eight police officers from deputy president Paul Mashatile’s VIP protection detail is a serious blow to justice and police accountability. The officers, dubbed the blue light mafia, were filmed assaulting civilians on the N1 highway in Johannesburg in July 2023 but were cleared in an internal disciplinary hearing. The organisation’s spokesperson Juanita du Preez says the outcome sends a dangerous message and retraumatises the victims:
