# The General Industries Workers Union of South Africa says the Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the first quarter of 2026 shows that unemployment is worsening. The official unemployment rate climbed from 31.4-percent to 32.7-percent, while the expanded unemployment rate, which includes discouraged work-seekers, rose to 43.7-percent. GIWUSA president, Mametlwe Sebei, says the only answer is to abolish the power of monopoly capital, and place the productive resources of this country under working-class control:
