# Police’s Counter-Intelligence head Feroz Khan, Gauteng Hawks head Ebrahim Kadwa, and businessman Tariq Downes have been released on twenty-thousand-rand bail each in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court in Gauteng. They face charges of the illegal possession of precious metal and defeating the ends of justice. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says Downes was allegedly found with gold worth over 62-thousand-rand at OR Tambo International Airport in 2021:
# The Western Cape government issued a severe wind warning for freight and truck drivers in the province this morning. Strong winds have caused multiple truck overturns on routes including Riversdale, Hemel-en-Aarde, R43 at Theewaterskloof Bridge, and R44 between Arabella and Kleinmond. Spokeperson Maxine Bezuidenhout is advising motorists to postpone unnecessary trips and remain highly vigilant on open coastal bridges, where strong crosswinds may particularly impact lighter vehicles:
Strong winds and falling trees have also caused widespread disruption across George. Several roads, including the Outeniqua Pass, Step Aside Road, and parts of the R404 near Blanco, remain closed due to debris. Emergency teams are clearing affected areas. # Iran executed a man convicted of spying for the US and Israeli intelligence services. The country’s news outlet, Mizan,identified the man as Erfan Shakourzadeh, saying he had worked at a scientific organisation involved in satellite activities and had shared classified scientific information with foreign intelligence services. According to the Iran Human Rights Society, the 29-year-old graduate of aerospace engineering was arrested last year and forced into a confession.
# Cricket: The Proteas Women’s squad for the T20 World Cup will be announced at a later date after today’s ceremony was halted a few minutes before scheduled time. Cricket South Africa says this was due to the need for further internal reviews. A group of 15 players will participate in the tournament in England and Wales, starting on 12 June. South Africa’s first match will be against Australia at Old Trafford the next day. Twelve teams will play a total off 33 games at seven stadiums.
