# Build One South Africa calls for the removal of Police minister Bheki Cele, citing police and intelligence failures during the July 2021 unrest. The South African Human Rights Commission’s report reveals communication breakdowns, insufficient resources, and technological limitations, leading to a week-long breakdown of law and order in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The party believes Cele’s removal is essential to restore public trust and credibility in the police. BOSA proposes measures to rebuild trust, expand the South African Police Service’s capacity, and revitalise the criminal justice system.
# Political analyst Bheki Mngomezulu says the ANC had no alternative but to suspend its former president, Jacob Zuma. Mngomezulu believes the decision was made to safeguard the party’s integrity after Zuma declared that he would not vote for the ANC. Mngomezulu highlights the significant impact of the ANC’s move, particularly as the Umkhonto we Sizwe party gains support in provinces like KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng:
# Diversity expert Asanda Ngoasheng has voiced her concerns about what she calls the DA’s failure to accommodate black people and only seek white leadership. In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Ngoasheng accused the DA of neglecting the needs of black individuals and failing to recognise that South Africa is a predominantly black country. She says the DA will not be able to effectively govern South Africa if they do not connect with, and acknowledge, the history of black South Africans.
# Bangladesh has reported its first Nipah virus fatality of the year. The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research’s director, Tahmina Shirin, confirmed that a man died after consuming raw date juice. The virus, transmitted through contact with infected bats, pigs, or humans’ bodily fluids, poses serious health risks. Shirin says Bangladesh recorded ten deaths among 14 cases last year, which was the highest in seven years. She warns of the lack of treatments or vaccines for Nipah virus.
# Cricket: Australia’s women clinched the three-match T20 series against the Proteas by winning the deciding encounter in Hobart with five wickets. South Africa posted 162 for seven, with Marizanne Kapp top-scoring with 75 runs. Suné Luus improved the record for the most ducks to nine when she was run out. The hostesses reached the target with five wickets down and four balls left, with opener Beth Mooney contributing 82 runs. Kapp says a few errors cost them the game and the series:
