In this bulletin:
# Defend our Democracy, the IFP and the Council of Churches react to the Constitutional Court ruling on the Phala Phala matter
# Vladimir Putin says he thinks the Russia-Ukraine war is coming to an end
# And rugby: The Sharks smash Benetton 46-7 in their United Rugby Championship clash
# Defend Our Democracy is calling on all South Africans including political parties, to respect the independence of the judiciary and to abide by its decisions. This followed the Constitutional Court ruling that declared the National Assembly’s handling of the Phala Phala matter unconstitutional and invalid. Defend Our Democracy’s Andries Sibanyoni says the rule of law is the cornerstone of democracy, and respect for judicial independence must always be maintained:
Meanwhile, the IFP maintains that Parliament is duty-bound to respect and implement the ruling. The party’s chief whip in the National Assembly, Nhlanhla Hadebe, says this is including the establishment of the relevant impeachment committee, in line with constitutional prescripts. He says the Court has now affirmed that Parliament acted unlawfully in 2022 when it rejected the findings of the independent panel:
The South African Council of Churches also respects the authority and independence of the Constitutional Court as the highest guardian of constitutional democracy in South Africa. The council’s General-Secretary, Mzwandile Molo, says the ruling affirms the importance of a public impeachment inquiry process that will allow South Africans to witness and understand the evidence, deliberations, and findings that ultimately inform the votes of Members of Parliament.
# Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that he thought the Ukraine war was coming to an end. His remarks came just hours after he had vowed victory in Ukraine at Moscow’s most scaled-back Victory Day parade in years. He also said he would be willing to negotiate new security arrangements for Europe, and that his preferred negotiating partner would be Germany’s former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. Putin faces a wave of anxiety in Moscow about the war in Ukraine, which has killed hundreds of thousands of people, left swathes of Ukraine in ruins, and drained Russia’s economy.
# Rugby: Jurenzo Julius bagged a hat-trick as the Sharks demolished Benetton in their United Rugby Championship clash in Durban on Saturday. The hosts ran in eight tries to hammer their Italian visitors 46-7. The Sharks’ clinical finishing and willingness to attack from all areas of the field proved too much for the Italians, as the Durban-based side finally produced the type of performance their supporters had been waiting for. In addition to the three tries by Julius, there were two more from Edwill van der Merwe, while Siya Kolisi, André Esterhuizen, and Litelihle Bester each added a try.
And motorsport: Defending MotoGP champion Marc Marquez will miss the rest of the French Grand Prix and next week’s Catalan Grand Prix after fracturing his foot in a crash on Saturday. The Ducati rider was thrown off his bike on the final lap of Saturday’s sprint at Le Mans. Ducati said in a statement the 33-year-old Spaniard had a fifth metatarsal fracture in his right foot and will fly to Madrid for surgery. Aprilia’s Jorge Martin won the sprint with Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia second and championship leader Marco Bezzecchi third.
