In this bulletin:
# BOSA demands minister Bheki Cele’s removal because of police failures in the July 2021 unrest
# The Eastern Cape Health Department is concerned about the continued attacks at health facilities
# And soccer: Morocco is ready for Bafana in the Afcon round of 16
# Build One South Africa calls for the removal of Police minister Bheki Cele, citing police and intelligence failures during the July 2021 unrest. The South African Human Rights Commission’s report reveals communication breakdowns, insufficient resources, and technological limitations, leading to a week-long breakdown of law and order in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The party believes Cele’s removal is essential to restore public trust and credibility in the police. BOSA proposes measures to rebuild trust, expand the South African Police Service’s capacity, and revitalise the criminal justice system.
Meanwhile, the DA slams the commission’s report, disputing its conclusion of no evidence linking the events to former president Jacob Zuma’s imprisonment. The report criticises the state’s poor response and management, and lack of accountability. The party remains concerned about security sector effectiveness and calls for a national security strategy. The DA’s Dianne Kohler Barnard suggests investigations should be handled by entrusted investigators able to reach definitive conclusions:
# The Eastern Cape Health Department says it is concerned about the continued attacks and criminal elements that are targeting health facilities in the province. In the latest incident, the Dora Nginza Hospital in Gqeberha had to operate in emergency power installation following the theft of cables supplying electricity to the hospital. The department’s spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, says when health facilities are vandalised or when healthcare workers are robbed, it is communities that suffer:
# Pakistan’s former prime minister and cricket captain, Imran Khan, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a special court. He was accused of not returning a diplomatic document after he was removed from office through a no-confidence vote in 2022. Khan was arrested on a separate charge last year and is still in prison despite that sentence being suspended. Pakistanis are going to the polls next Thursday, but Khan, regarded as the most popular politician, was barred from taking place. He intends to appeal the sentence.
# Soccer: The last two places in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations are up for grabs tonight when the final matches in the round of 16 take place. Mali will take on Burkina Faso in the first game and then will follow the big clash between Bafana Bafana and Morocco. The South African squad is full of players who represent the very successful Mamelodi Sundowns. Morocco’s coach, Walid Reragui, says that continuity will give them a lot of confidence:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-87-cents and the euro at 20-rand-46-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-92-cents and Bitcoin trades at 43-thousand-730-dollars-60-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-and-35-dollars-63-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 81-dollars-45-cents a barrel.
