# NATJOINTS urges protesters to act within the confines of the law
# And, the Weather Service is monitoring the intensifying rain and thundershowers countrywide
# The Constitutional Court will deliver its long-awaited judgment in the Phala Phala case involving president Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday, nearly 18 months after hearing arguments. The EFF and the African Transformation Movement want the apex court to compel Parliament to adopt the section 89 Independent Panel’s report, which could pave the way for Ramaphosa’s impeachment. In December 2022, the panel found there was a prima facie case that Ramaphosa may have violated his oath of office in connection with the theft of money from his Limpopo game farm in 2020.
# The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure is calling on all protesters to conduct themselves responsibly and within the law during demonstrations across the country. This comes as the issue of illegal immigration has seen frustrated South Africans taking part in marches, where, in some cases, foreign-owned shops have been set alight. NATJOINTS says while the Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful protest, this right must be exercised without violence, intimidation, or unlawful conduct. It adds that law enforcement will act decisively against anyone carrying dangerous weapons or inciting violence.
# AfriForum welcomes an order by the High Court in Pretoria instructing the City of Tshwane to restore electricity to schools that were cut off due to disputed property rate payments. The urgent case was heard after several schools were left without power, disrupting teaching, safety systems and feeding schemes. AfriForum’s Alana Bailey says the ruling brings relief to affected learners and staff, calling for better coordination to prevent similar disruptions in the future:
# Soccer: Arsenal are through to the Champions League final for the first time since 2006 after beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 on aggregate. Level at 1-1 after the first leg, Bukayo Saka’s 44-minute goal in the second leg secured a 1-0 victory for the Gunners. Arsenal will face either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on May 30, as they bid to lift the trophy for the first time. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says what they have achieved is unbelievable:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-54-cents and the euro at 19-rand-38-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-43-cents, and Bitcoin trades at 81-thousand-556-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-646-dollars-8-cents a fine ounce, and Brent crude oil is quoted at 106-dollars-17-cents a barrel.
# And finally, the South African Weather Service says it is continuing to monitor the intense cut-off low-pressure system currently affecting parts of the country. Widespread showers and thundershowers have already been experienced in places over much of the country. Weather forecaster, Tokelo Chiloane, says an orange level eight warning for disruptive rain has been issued over the Koukamma and Kouga municipalities of the Eastern Cape, as well as the Garden Route of the Western Cape, today into Thursday:
