Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: Batter Rassie van der Dussen has ended his Proteas career. The 37-year-old started playing for South Africa in 2018 and scored a total of four-thousand-968 runs in all formats since. Van der Dussen says he retires from the international game with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude, describing playing for his country as the greatest honour of his life. Cricket South Africa’s director of national teams, Enoch Nkwe, says his legacy in the green and gold extends beyond his on-field performances.
More cricket news: England’s Cricket Regulator has issued white-ball captain Harry Brook and all-rounder Jacob Bethell with caution notices for breaching player conduct rules. During their one-day series against New Zealand last year, Brook had a confrontation with a nightclub bouncer in Wellington. The 26-year-old initially insisted he was out alone, but later admitted he had been accompanied by Bethell and fast bowler Josh Tongue. No further action has been taken against Tongue. The notices will remain on Brook and Bethell’s disciplinary records for the next three years.
# Soccer: Italian media is ruing what it describes as the country’s World Cup curse after the national team failed to qualify for this year’s tournament in Northern America. The four-time champion will miss the third consecutive World Cup. Italy lost on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Tuesday’s final qualifier after also losing its previous playoffs against Sweden and North Macedonia. The defeat sparked outrage in the soccer-mad country, with politicians calling for the resignation of the president of the governing body, Gabriele Gravina.
# Rugby: Senirusi Seruvakula will coach Fiji in their first three Nations Championship matches after he was appointed in an interim capacity following the departure of Mick Byrne. Byrne left with immediate effect yesterday due to what Fiji Rugby Union chief Koli Sewabu describes as a disagreement over a new direction for the team before next year’s World cup in Australia. Sewabu says the board has full confidence in Seruvakula for the three matches against Wales, England and Scotland in Europe in July.
# And golf: The PGA of America says Tiger Woods has taken himself out of consideration to be the 2027 US Ryder Cup team captain. The 15-time major champion was arrested last Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence during a car crash near his home in South Florida. Before this incident, it was widely reported that Woods was the favourite to lead the US team at Adare Manor in Ireland. The PGA of America says it supports Woods as he steps away to focus on his health and well-being.
