BULLETIN 22 March 1 pm
Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The GOOD Party says the nation is stuck between good constitutional intent and poor practical implementation
# Israel claims Iran has missiles that can reach European capitals
# And cricket: The Proteas women drop the series as New Zealand takes the fourth T20
# The GOOD Party says the struggle to convert technical rights into better lived experiences for the majority of the population persists. GOOD Secretary-General, Brett Herron says the nation is stuck between good constitutional intent and poor practical implementation. He says with local government elections on the horizon, populists, sellers of identity politics, and those who don’t believe in non-racial justice, are licking their lips:
# EFF leader Julius Malema says the party will continue to form an integral part of Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee as it finalises its recommendations. The committee was established to investigate the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi into the capture of law enforcement agencies. Malema says at the top of those recommendations must be the removal of Senzo Mchunu as a minister of Police, and the recovering of the money used by the state to pay him while he was on special leave. Mchunu has been on special leave since June 2025.
# Eskom has spent 6.395-billion-rand on diesel-fueled open cycle gas turbines since May 2025, to generate over one-thousand-77-gigawatt-hour of electrical energy. The power utility’s spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena says this is significantly lower than the two-thousand-608.82-gigawatt-hour generated during the same period last year, which resulted in costs of 15.64-billion-rand. She says planned maintenance was at an average of five-thousand-403-megawatts, accounting for 11.48-percent of total generation capacity:
# The South African Municipal Workers’ Union in Gauteng has welcomed the passing of the City of Johannesburg adjustment budget which includes the implementation of the politically facilitated agreement. Provincial secretary, Julia Phakula, says this is marking an important victory for municipal workers who have endured decades of wage injustice. She says SAMWU is particularly concerned by the continued posture of the DA, which has once again positioned itself in opposition to measures that seek to advance the interests of workers.
# Israel has claimed that Iran has long-range missiles capable of a range of four-thousand kilometres. Israel’s Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir said the missiles are capable to reach the capitals of Europe, with London, Berlin, Paris, and Rome all within direct range. According to Sky News the warning comes after two Iranian ballistic missiles were fired at the joint UK-US Diego Garcia military base on Friday night. While the missiles did not hit, they are thought to have travelled around four-thousand kilometres, further than previously thought capable for Tehran.
# And finally cricket: Four drop catches, three of them costly, saw the Proteas women fall to a bitterly disappointing six-wicket defeat to the New Zealand White Ferns, in the fourth T20 Test in Wellington earlier today. New Zealand’s two top scorers, Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr were both dropped with Devine twice, as the Proteas fielding allowed the hosts to chase down the 160-run target with nine balls to spare. The loss means the hosts take an unassailable three-one lead in the five-match series, ahead of the fifth and final match in Christchurch this coming Wednesday.
