Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up we have cricket: Two South Africans, captain Aiden Markram and Lungi Ngidi, have been named in the T20 World Cup Team of the Tournament. Markram led the Proteas to the semifinals, and scored 286 runs in the tournament, including three half-centuries. He was also named the captain of the side. Ngidi took 12 wickets. The winning team, India, has four players selected: Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah. England has two players picked, while Pakistan, the West Indies, Zimbabwe, and the USA have one player each.
More cricket news: South African Gary Kirsten has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s new head coach on a two-year deal. The 58-year-old replaces Sanath Jayasuriya, who resigned after the team’s exit from the T20 World Cup. Kirsten’s contract runs until April 2028. He famously guided India to their 2011 World Cup title, and under his tenure, South Africa became the top-ranked side in all formats of the game in 2013. Sri Lankan Cricket says Kirsten’s primary responsibility will be to guide the team in its preparation and campaign for next year’s World Cup.
# Rugby: French flanker Oscar Jegou is facing a disciplinary hearing today after being cited for an alleged eye gouge on Scotland’s replacement hooker, Ewan Ashman, during Saturday’s Six Nations match in Edinburgh. Jegou wasn’t penalised during the match, which the Scots won 50-40 to keep their dream of the title alive. A similar incident during November’s victory over Wales saw Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth being banned for 12 weeks, and he will only return to action later this month.
Other rugby news: The sevens world series moves to New York this weekend after South Africa won the Vancouver tournament in Canada on Sunday. The Blitzboks’ third title so far this season saw them catch up with Fiji, who was eliminated in the semifinals. Only a points difference makes the islanders edge out South Africa on top of the standings. South Africa will face Australia, France and New Zealand in Pool A in the American city, while Spain, Fiji, Argentina and Great Britain will do battle in Pool B.
# And soccer: German giants RB Leipzig will visit South Africa for the first time in May. They plan to play a friendly against Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria on the 29th. Leipzig’s general manager, Johann Plenge, describes South Africa as a very exciting soccer market and culturally impressive destination for the club and Germany’s Bundesliga. He says Sundowns has shaped the game in Africa and enjoys significant international recognition. The match will be played at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
