# National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi has dismissed accusations that she lied about adviser David Broughton’s role in the Cato Manor racketeering case and charges involving former Crime Intelligence head Richard Mdluli. She faced tough cross-examination at the Nkabinde inquiry into Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority head Andrew Chauke’s fitness for office. Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi said Batohi misrepresented Broughton’s input. She insisted her understanding was that Broughton made no recommendation:
# Forum for South Africa demands a full lifestyle audit on Judge Portia Phahlane and any other judges suspected of improper conduct or unexplained wealth. The judge of the High Court in Pretoria has been placed on special leave following corruption and money laundering charges. FOSA leader, Tebogo Mashilompane says the forum is also demanding a comprehensive review of all cases she has presided over, especially those where alleged perpetrators were acquitted or vindicated:
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Development is calling for written submissions on the draft Traditional Courts Regulations and Draft Code of Conduct. The regulations and code of conduct have been published in terms of Sections 16 and 17 of the Traditional Courts Act. The ministry’s spokesperson, Terrence Manase, says the draft regulations were developed following consultations with national and provincial traditional affairs authorities and the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders:
# Soccer: Mohamed Salah’s Egyption teammates have rallied around him after his fallout with his manager at Liverpool, Arne Slot. The Dutchman left him out of his team for Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League match against Inter Milan after he criticised Slot in public. This followed after he had to start three matches on the bench. Egyptian striker Kouka Hassan describes Salah as a legend for club and country. Salah joins his national teammates for the Africa Cup of Nations, starting in Morocco on the 21st.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-90-cents and the euro at 19-rand-80-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-62-cents and Bitcoin trades at 90-thousand-369-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-217-dollars-33-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 61-dollars-19-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Crue Invest director, Eric Jordaan, says annual bonuses should be treated as a tool for financial progress rather than free money. In his opinion piece on Moneyweb, he advises using bonuses to clear high-interest debt, boost emergency savings, and top up retirement funds to maximise tax benefits. Jordaan also highlights tax-free investments, children’s education, and home loan repayments as smart options. He adds investing in personal development and reserving a small portion for enjoyment ensures both long-term security and rewards for hard work.
