Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with rugby: South Africa and Wales will both field weakened teams in Saturday’s Test in Cardiff. The encounter falls outside the international window, and many players were allowed to return to their clubs. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus will have only about 24 players to choose from, while Welsh coach Steve Tandy lost 13 players. Wales hopes to bounce back from their loss to the All Blacks after their victory over Japan – their first at home in over two years – while the Boks hope for another undefeated tour.
Meanwhile, the Springbok’s scrum coach, Daan Human, says the absence of the first-choice players gives the younger players the opportunity to impress. The Boks have won 11 out of their 13 Tests so far this season, while Wales have won only two of their 10 games. Human says missing some players won’t have a disruptive impact, as they are used to rotating match-day squads:
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named a 54-player preliminary squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, starting in Morocco next month. He has opted for a blend of experience and emerging talent in his initial selection, including the likes of Themba Zwane, Under-20 Afcon-winning centre-back Tylon Smith, and Shandré Campbell. There is also a notable return for Fawaaz Basadien. The squad will be trimmed to 23 players early next month. South Africa is in Group B alongside Angola, Egypt, and Zimbabwe.
# Golf: The Sunshine Ladies Tour will have a strengthened 2026 schedule, boosting ten tournaments. Anchoring the schedule will be the co-sanctioned events with the Ladies European Tour, the Joburg Ladies Open, and the South African Women’s Open. The Ladies Classic, to be played in Mauritius, is a new addition next year. Sunshine Tour commissioner, Thomas Abt, says growing the player pathway is incredibly important, and the schedule provides the players with even greater opportunities to develop their careers on an international stage.
# And cricket: Australia still isn’t sure about the fitness of captain Pat Cummins for the second Ashes Test against England, starting in Brisbane next Thursday. He said himself this weekend there was only a half chance he would recover in time from a back problem. Former skipper Steve Smith captained the hosts when they beat England by eight wickets within two days in the first match in Perth. Another fast bowler, Josh Hazlewood, was injured before the first Test, but should be available again later in the series.
