BULLETIN 25 November 12 pm
Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Correctional Services tightens security at the Kgoši Mampuru Prison ahead of Matlala’s testimony
# Three people are killed and 16 injured in a major Ukrainian drone attack on southern Russia
# And Greta Thunberg is banned from Venice after dyeing the Grand Canal green in a COP30 protest
# The Department of Correctional Services says security has been heightened significantly at the Kgoši Mampuru Correctional Centre in Tshwane where Parliament’s ad hoc committee will be hearing testimony from Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. He is currently awaiting trial, facing multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit murder. The department’s spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, told Newzroom Afrika strict measures are in place to ensure the safety of the committee members:
# The DA has reported MK Party member of Parliament, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, to Parliament’s Ethics Committee. This comes after her sister, Nkosazana Bongamini Zuma-Mncube, accused her and two others of playing a part in luring 17 young South African men into travelling to Russia under false pretences, and then being forced to fight in the Ukrainian war. The DA’s Chris Hattingh says the party will also file a criminal case with the police against Zuma-Sambudla and others:
Meanwhile, three people were killed and at least 16 injured in a major Ukrainian drone attack on southern Russia. Residential buildings were reportedly damaged in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk and nearby cities. The Russian Defence Ministry reported that 249 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight, including 116 over the Black Sea, and 92 over the Krasnodar region. Meanwhile, a senior Ukrainian official says Russia launched a drone attack on Kyiv early this morning, triggering fires in at least two residential buildings and killing one person.
# Rugby: Springbok scrum coach Daan Human says Saturday’s Test against Wales in Cardiff is another opportunity for the younger players to impress. Both teams will be missing several choice players as the clash falls outside of the international window. The Boks have won 11 out of their 13 Tests so far this season, while Wales have won only two of their 10 games. Human says missing some players won’t have a disruptive impact, as they are used to rotating match-day squads:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-26-cents and the euro at 19-rand-89-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-64-cents and Bitcoin trades at 87-thousand-411-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-136-dollars-52-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 62-dollars-36-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has been banned from Venice after dyeing water in the Grand Canal green in protest of COP30. Footage shows several canals, rivers, lakes and fountains across ten different Italian cities all coloured a vibrant green as part of the Stop Ecocide protest. In Venice, demonstrators wore red to express their dissatisfaction that agreements made at the Brazilian summit did not include limits on the use of fossil fuels. Thunberg was issued with a three-thousand-rand fine and a 48-hour ban on entering the city.
