RISE Mzansi urges alternative sentencing amid the overcrowding crisis [SOUND]

# RISE Mzansi says South Africa’s prisons are overcrowded, with unsentenced inmates significantly contributing to the crisis. The party’s Mabine Seabe says according to the 2024/25 Department of Correctional Services report, facilities are at 61-percent above capacity, leaving 65-thousand inmates without beds. The Eastern Cape faces the worst overcrowding, with Butterworth Remand Detention Facility at 231-percent capacity. Seabe says RISE Mzansi calls for alternative sentencing, restorative justice, and measures to reduce the risk of inmates joining gangs:
