# The police’s national head of Ballistics, Mishak Mkhabela, has told the Madlanga commission that a backlog of more than 41-thousand ballistic cases across the country is delaying criminal investigations, with the Western Cape hardest hit. Mkhabela said only 42 analysts are available to handle over 29-thousand firearms, many linked to multiple crimes. He warned that detectives are often working in the dark due to delayed reports:
