Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA says the BEE model has become a key driver of corruption
# The UDM Women’s Organisation says victims must be placed at the centre of parole decisions
# And soccer: Morocco is the Under-20 World Cup champion for the first time
# The DA says the current Black Economic Empowerment model has become a key driver of corruption. The party says South Africans have witnessed this in the widescale looting of approximately two-billion-rand from Tembisa Hospital, and the murder of the City of Ekurhuleni’s chief auditor, Mpho Mafole, allegedly over a 1.8-billion-rand chemical toilets tender. The DA’s Mat Cuthbert says the ANC continues to defend it due to their vested interests:
# The UDM Women’s Organisation says until the country’s parole system is rebuilt on principles of accountability and transparency, it will remain a danger to the very people it is meant to protect. The recent findings of the Auditor-General on the Department of Correctional Services expose deep and long-standing weaknesses in the country’s parole system. UDEMWO’s secretary-general, Thandi Nontenja, says victims must be placed at the centre of parole decisions, and their safety must carry more weight than administrative convenience:
Moving abroad:
# Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky says he would be ready to join Russian president Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, at their summit in Hungary if he is invited. Trump and Putin said they would meet in the Hungarian capital, possibly in a matter of weeks, as Trump continues to try to broker a peace deal to end the three-and-a-half-year war, triggered by Russia’s 2022 invasion. Zelensky criticised the choice of Hungary, as it is seen as the most Kremlin-sympathetic member of the European Union.
# Soccer: Morocco defeated Argentina 2-0 to win the Under-20 World Cup in Chile, becoming the first African nation to secure the title since Ghana in 2009. First-half goals from Yassir Zabiri sealed the victory, marking a first World Cup victory for Morocco in any age-group level in the country’s history. Argentina was the overwhelming favourite in the final, having won a record six titles and only lost one decider. Meanwhile, the USA’s Benjamin Cremaschi won the tournament’s golden ball, with Argentina’s goalkeeper, Santino Barbi, winning the golden glove.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-33-cents and the euro at 20-rand-20-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-24-cents and Bitcoin trades at 110-thousand-731-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-261-dollars-34-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 60-dollars-75-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Universal and Blumhouse’s horror sequel, Black Phone 2, debuted at number one in the North American theatres over the weekend. The sequel returns Ethan Hawke as the serial killer known as Grabber, and Mason Thames as Finn. Second place went to Disney’s sci-fi sequel Tron: Ares, with newcomer Lionsgate’s R-rated comedy Good Fortune, starring Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen, opening at number three. Channing Tatum’s Roofman and Leonardo DiCaprio’s action comedy One Battle After Another rounded out the top five box office chart.
