# The DA says it has noted with profound concern Bloomberg reports that laser range-finding equipment manufactured by South African firm LightWare Opto-electronics has been recovered from Russian drones used in the war against Ukraine. The DA’s Chris Hattingh says the party will pursue the publishing of the National Conventional Arms Control Committee findings on the LightWare matter in a form fit for public and parliamentary scrutiny:
Meanwhile, senior Ukrainian officials visiting the United States met with representatives of US weapon manufacturers, including Raytheon, which produces Tomahawk missiles that Washington could provide to Kyiv. The Ukrainian delegation’s two-day visit also included talks with senior US officials and comes ahead of a planned meeting between US president Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, on Friday. Trump is mulling sending the missiles to Ukraine.
# Quality assurance body, Umalusi says it’s ready for this year’s end-of-year national matric examinations across public and private assessment bodies. The council confirmed that systems are in place to ensure credible, fair, and compliant exam administration. It also reiterated that online schools are not yet accredited due to the absence of a regulatory framework. Umalusi CEO Mafu Rakometsi says monitoring measures introduced this year are already showing positive results:
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says he plans to retire after next year’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. South Africa defeated Rwanda 3-0 last night to finish top of Group C and qualify for the global showpiece for the first time since 2002, although they participated as host nation in 2010. The 73-year-old Belgian says ending his coaching career at the World Cup feels like the perfect conclusion to his decades-long journey in the sport:

# And finally: Kenya’s former prime minister, Raila Odinga, has died while receiving treatment in Kochi, India. The 80-year-old reportedly suffered cardiac arrest during a walk and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Odinga contested five presidential elections and lost in all as Kenya’s longest-serving opposition figure. He contributed to multiparty democracy and the implementation of a new constitution in 2010. Odinga spent years in jail and exile under the late president Daniel arap Moi’s autocratic rule. He also contributed to African politics, recently campaigning for the African Union presidency.
