Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: Senuran Muthusamy was the Proteas’ big hero on the second day of the first Test against Pakistan in Lahore. He took a total of six wickets in the hosts’ first innings to help bowl them out for 378. Pakistan resumed on 313 for five, and Muthusamy took three wickets in a single over to reign them in. The two-match series is the Proteas’ first of the new World Test Championship cycle after beating Australia in the final of the previous cycle in June.
More cricket news: The Proteas Women play Bangladesj in the World Cup today after Australia cemented its top position on the log with a three-wicket victory over co-hostess India yesterday. India posted a very good 330 when their last wicket fell in the penultimate over, but the defending champion reached the target with an over to spare and seven wickets down. The other countries currently in semifinal contention are England, India and South Africa, while New Zealand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan are in the bottom part of the log.
# Rugby: Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has selected 34 players for the end-of-year tour of Japan and Europe. The squad includes two uncapped players, Aidan Ross and Kalani Thomas, while Dylan Pietsch and Andrew Kellaway make their returns from injury. Flyhalf Carter Gordon has also been selected after securing a release from his National Rugby League deal. Australia will play five consecutive Tests on their end-of-year tour against Japan in Tokyo, England in London, Italy in Udine, Ireland in Dublin, and France in Paris.
# Tennis: World number 204 Valentin Vacherot defeated his cousin Arthur Rinderknech to win the Shanghai Masters, his maiden ATP tour-level title. Meanwhile, two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff beat her American compatriot Jessica Pegula, 6-4, 7-5, to win the Wuhan Open in China. This marks Gauff’s 11th career WTA singles title and her second this year, following her French Open victory.
# And finally, road running: Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda won the 47th Chicago Marathon, clocking in a time of two-hours, two-minutes and 23-seconds. Running in just his second marathon, Kiplimo upgraded his London Marathon debut second place to a victory. Kenyans Amos Kipruto and Alex Masai finished second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, Hawi Feysa became the first Ethiopian winner of the Chicago Marathon women’s race in eight years, taking more than two minutes off her personal best to win in two-hours, 14-minutes, and 56-seconds.
