Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with cricket: South Africa secured their second victory of the Women’s World Cup, defeating tournament co-hostesses India by three wickets in Visakhapatnam. Richa Ghosh scored 94 off 77 runs and shared an eighth-wicket partnership of 88 with Sneh Rana to help India post 251. Chloé Tryon took three wickets. The Proteas slumped to 142 for six with captain Laura Wolvaardt scoring 70. All-rounder Nadine de Klerk then stepped up with the bat with a brilliant unbeaten 84 off 54 balls to lead South Africa to victory with seven balls to spare.
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams says qualifying for the World Cup is still in their hands, as they head into this evening’s crucial Group C qualifier against Zimbabwe in Durban. South Africa topped the group with 17 points before receiving a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho in March. They now sit level with Benin on 14 points and behind on goal difference. Their final qualifier is against Rwanda next Tuesday. Williams says they know what is at stake:
# Rugby: Springbok backline stars Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Damian Willemse were included straight into the Stormers’ starting line-up on their return from international duty. They will face Scarlets in Llanelli, Wales, in a United Rugby Championship match this evening. The Cape team started the season on a high with victories over defending champion Leinster and Ospreys in their first two games. Another Bok player, scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, won’t play today after only joining the Stormers from Montpellier in the off-season.
# Mixed Martial Arts: South Africa’s Billy Oosthuizen was crowned the new EFC Interim Featherweight champion at the WSB EFC Arena in Johannesburg. The highly anticipated main event between Oosthuizen and Zambian Ken Sekeletu ended in controversy when Sekeletu was disqualified in Round 3 for repeated illegal strikes. Sekeletu had won the featherweight title against Roedie Roets in March. Oosthuizen, who is a seasoned veteran with 15 fights inside the EFC cage, will next face either Boyd Allen or Vince Bembe.
# And finally, motorsport: Williams’ Spanish Formula One driver, Carlos Sainz, thinks television coverage should rather focus on races than the drivers’ girlfriends. This follows after viewers were treated to the sight of high-profile girlfriends and celebrity guests during Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix while some on-track action wasn’t shown. Sainz’s recovery drive from the back of the grid to tenth position was also not covered. His girlfriend, model Rebecca Donaldson, and other drivers’ partners have huge online followings of their own.
