Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We begin with cricket: South Africa defeated New Zealand by six wickets in Indore, India, to record their first victory at the Women’s World Cup. Nonkululeko Mlaba claimed four wickets as the Proteas dismissed the White Ferns for 231. In reply, Tazmin Brits scored 101, becoming the first woman to score five ODI centuries in a year, and shared a 159-run partnership with Suné Luus, as South Africa cruised to their target with 55 balls to spare. The Proteas Women suffered a crushing defeat to England in their opening match last Friday.
# Rugby: Thirteen Springboks players, including Handrè Pollard, Wilco Louw and Canan Moodie, have been included in the Bulls’ 31-man touring squad for United Rugby Championship fixtures against Ulster, Connacht and Glasgow Warriors. Pollard is in line to make his second Bulls debut after re-joining the Pretoria-based club from Leicester Tigers. Captain Marcell Coetzee is out after failing a head injury assessment, while Kurt-Lee Arendse has a hamstring injury. Coach Johan Ackermann hopes to get the Boks integrated quickly:
Meanwhile, the Stormers will be without Springbok tighthead Neethling Fouché for the foreseeable future after he broke his arm in Friday’s United Rugby Championship match against Ospreys in Cape Town. Another Bok prop, Frans Malherbe, is still recovering from a troublesome back injury. Coach John Dobson says the good news is that their Bok backline players Sacha Feinberg Mngomezulu, Damian de Allende and Cobus Reinach should join them soon after clinching the Rugby Championship. The Stormers are currently second on the log behind the Bulls.
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says his players deserve to go to next year’s World Cup, after working extremely hard to put themselves in contention in the last two years. Last month, FIFA deducted three points from South Africa after fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho. Broos says victories are vital in their last two qualifiers against Zimbabwe on Friday and Rwanda next Tuesday. He adds he has faith in his players to get over the line:
# And motorsport: Seven-time MotoGP world champion, Marc Marquez, will miss the next two races in Australia and Malaysia due to injury. The Ducati rider suffered a fracture and ligament injury to his right shoulder in a crash at the Indonesian Grand Prix on Sunday, but won’t require surgery. The 32-year-old Spaniard could still compete at Grands Prix in Portugal and Valencia next month, but stressed he would not rush his recovery and will only return once he is 100-percent fit.
