# Malawi’s former president, Peter Mutharika, has won the elections, taking over a country whose economy is in crisis, with high living costs, a shortage of foreign currency, and corruption on a grand scale. The 85-year-old got 56.8-percent of the vote compared with 33-percent for president Lazarus Chakwera. Mutharika, a former professor of law, served as president from 2014 to 2020. Chakwera conceded defeat and said he was committed to a peaceful transfer of power. The swearing-in ceremony must be organised within 30 days.
