Laboratory service implements strategy to cut toxicology backlog by 50%

# The National Health Laboratory Service has launched a major plan to cut its toxicology backlog by half by the 2025/2026 financial year. The initiative includes new high-output laboratory equipment, additional technical staff, and dedicated processing units in Johannesburg and Pretoria, in Gauteng, to process old cases separately from new ones. The service’s Mzi Gcukumana says services are also expanding in KwaZulu-Natal, and digital systems are being upgraded to make testing faster and more reliable.
