# The City of eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal has become the first municipality in South Africa to receive ministerial approval to generate its own electricity. Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa granted a Section 34 Determination, enabling Durban to procure 400-megawatts from independent producers, that is, 100-megawatts from solar Photovoltaic and 300-megawatts from gas-to-power projects. The minister says the move aims to reduce reliance on Eskom, cut load-shedding risks, and boost energy security and energy independence:
