# Western Cape MEC of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, says the Franco Three Fountains Nature Reserve protects unique ecosystems and threatened species. The 20-hectare nature reserve, located in the Klein Dassenberg smallholdings area near Cape Town, has been declared a protected area. It is the first protected area dedicated to safeguarding the rare and endangered Cape Vernal Pools ecosystem. Bredell says this is a positive step for biodiversity conservation.
