Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, rugby: The Currie Cup Premier Division kicks off at seven o’clock this evening when Pumas host the Griquas at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga. Tomorrow, the Lions will welcome the Sharks to Ellis Park in Johannesburg at 3 pm, and two hours later, Western Province will take on their arch enemy, the Bulls, at the Cape Town stadium. The weekend’s last encounter will start in Wellington at three o’clock on Sunday afternoon between Boland and Cheetahs. The Sharks are the defending champions.
Meanwhile, new Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann says egos won’t be tolerated at Loftus, and each player will have to earn his place in the team. He promised his men they would always know where they stood with him. Ackermann wants a team that works hard, and also warns every player will have to serve the team first. He says he doesn’t want to be the director of rugby like his predecessor, Jake White, but the coach who gets his hands dirty on the field.
# Soccer: Banyana Banyana’s head coach, Desiree Ellis, says she will contemplate her future after they return from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco next week. The defending champions were knocked out by Nigeria in the semifinal and play Ghana in the third-place play-off tonight. Nigeria and the hostesses will play in tomorrow’s final. Ellis, who had been with Banyana since 2016, admits it would be difficult to lift her players’ spirit after the semifinal loss and the horrific leg injury to attacker Gabby Salgado.
# Cricket: England has a 133-run deficit at the start of the third day of the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford in Manchester. Captain Ben Stokes claimed his first five-wicket haul since 2017 as India, who resumed the day on 264 for four, were ultimately bowled out for 358. Openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley led the charge with a commanding 166-run partnership, and England had 225 for two at stumps. The hosts lead the five-match series 2-1.
# And motorsport: A race in Brazil will replace one in Argentina in next season’s MotoGP. Organisers announced the race at the Ayrton Senna circuit in Goiania, scheduled for the second event of the 2026 campaign, marks Brazil’s return to MotoGP, having hosted races between 1987 and ’89. Argentina is set to organise a race again once a circuit is built near Buenos Aires. The season will end on November 22 in the Spanish city of Valencia.
