Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The first group of teens stranded in Europe will arrive back in Cape Town today
# The deputy president of the Patriotic Alliance distances himself from murder accused Katiso KT Molefe
# And Qatar shows interest in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games
# The first group of Cape Town teenagers stranded in Spain after participating in the prestigious Donosti Cup soccer tournament will arrive back in South Africa this afternoon. The BT Soccer Academy players successfully competed in the competition, but flights home could not be paid for from the package pricing. Through interventions from the Western Cape government and donations from South Africans, the money for the plane tickets was raised. The stranded group, which includes 25 children between the ages of 13 and 18 years old, and three coaches, will fly from Portugal to South Africa.
# Patriotic Alliance deputy president, Kenny Kunene, has denied being friends with businessman and murder suspect Katiso KT Molefe, arrested in connection with DJ Sumbody’s 2022 killing. The DA has called for his resignation. Speaking to SABC News, Kunene confirmed visiting Molefe’s home to facilitate an exclusive interview for his online platform, African News Global, which is being revived by young media talent. He insists the meeting was purely journalistic:
# The Polokwane Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo postponed the murder case against nine Correctional Service officials attached to the local prison to August 21st for further investigations. The officials were arrested following the death of an inmate who was allegedly assaulted and later succumbed to injuries in July last year. Police spokesperson, Malesela Ledwaba, says the accused are currently all out on bail of one-thousand-500-rand each:
Moving abroad:
# Former US president Barack Obama has rejected president Donald Trump’s accusations that he tried to engineer a coup following Trump’s 2016 election victory. Trump claimed Obama had sought to undermine his victory over Hillary Clinton by manufacturing evidence of Russian interference. Obama says he normally does not dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of the White House with a response, but these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. He says these bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.
# Olympic Games: Qatar is interested in hosting the Summer and Paralympic Games of 2036. The country’s Olympic Committee is currently discussing the election process with the International Olympic Committee, saying it wants to showcase the potential of Arab youth on the global stage after hosting the 2022 Soccer World Cup. Sky Sports reports the Gulf nation could face a challenge from neighbouring country Saudi Arabia, which is staging the soccer tournament in 2034, while India may also be interested.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-57-cents and the euro at 20-rand-63-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-79-cents and Bitcoin trades at 118-thousand-452-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-426-dollars-22-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 67-dollars-72-cents a barrel.
