# Trump hits Brazil with a 50-percent tariff
# And cricket: Defending champions MI Cape Town will kick off SA20’s fourth season on Boxing Day
# Sakeliga says the amended Employment Equity Act imposes race-based hiring quotas that are impossible to meet and harmful to the economy. The business group, along with the National Employers Association of South Africa, argues the new regulations are unconstitutional and violate the freedom of employers and employees. Sakeliga CEO Piet le Roux warns the quotas could cause job losses and increase division in society:
# The Department of Military Veterans says it is aware of concerns raised by approximately 300 veterans regarding delays in the disbursement of their pension. Since the implementation of this benefit in November 2023, over four-thousand-378 veterans have successfully received their pensions. The department’s Mxolisi Mkhonza says, due to budgetary constraints, it has become evident that the regulations governing the disbursement of the veterans’ pension need to be reviewed:
# The DA in Ekurhuleni says it will approach the Special Investigation Unit to probe the disappearance of over two-billion-rand from the metro’s revenue, and the alleged link to Mpho Mafole’s murder. The metro’s former divisional head of forensic auditing was looking into the matter when he was killed last month. The DA’s Brandon Pretorius says Ekurhuleni reportedly lost the money as a result of thousands of breached electricity accounts:
Moving abroad:
# US president Donald Trump says his administration will impose a 50-percent tariff on all imports from Brazil. He has accused Brazil of attacks on US tech companies and of conducting a witch hunt against former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro. He is facing trial over accusations he plotted a coup after his narrow 2022 election loss. In response, Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has vowed to reciprocate if Trump follows through with his threat and warned against any interference in his country’s judicial system.
# Cricket: Defending champions MI Cape Town will kick off season four of the SA20 against Durban’s Super Giants at Newlands on the 26th of December. The annual T20 tounament starts earlier than previous seasons because of the lack of international cricket in South Africa over the Christmas period. A double-header will be played two days later, with Pretoria Capitals and Joburg Super Giants doing battle in Centurion, and Paarl Royals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape meeting at Boland Park. The final will be played on 25 January.
