# Water and Sanitation Department has dismissed social media claims that the Mthatha Dam caused recent flooding due to opened sluice gates. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, head of Specialist Unit-Dam Safety, Wally Ramokopa, emphasised that the dam has no such gates. Ramokopa confirmed the overflow was natural and added that flooding was worsened by the Qaqoqa River. He urged residents to avoid building near riverbanks and flood-prone areas for safety:
