# The National Institute For Communicable Diseases is calling for heightened awareness against rabies. Rabies is a viral disease transmitted primarily through the saliva of infected animals. The Institue’s doctor Vuyiswa Khumalo says most human rabies cases are linked to dog bites, and the disease is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. She says rabies remains a serious public health threat in South Africa, particularly in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo:
