# The Department of Cooperative Governance has launched a review of the 1998 White Paper on Local Government, which could see the number of municipalities reduced from 257. Speaking at the launch in Kempton Park in Gauteng, minister Velenkosini Hlabisa said some municipalities are no longer financially viable and fail to deliver services.
