# The DA in the Eastern Cape says police in the province has civil claims totalling 7.5-billion-rand pending against its members. The provincial Department of Community Safety has already paid out over 47-million-rand in civil claims for the 2022/23 financial year, ranging from unlawful arrest and illegal search and seizure to assault and shooting. The DA’s Bobby Stevenson says 15-million-rand has been paid for the first four months of the 2023/24 financial year:
# KwaZulu-Natal children’s sector researcher, Siyabonga Nzimande, is concerned about a lack of action to curb teenage pregnancy in South Africa. At least 190 teenage mothers gave birth on New Year’s Day with 145 on Christmas Day. The research showed that these young girls are coming from broken families. Nzimande told Newzroom Afrika that all South Africans need to work together to end teenage pregnancy in the country:
# The City of Cape Town is urging residents to use water wisely. Cape Town’s average water use over the past week has been 968 million litres per day, higher than the metro’s current target. The metro encourages residents to continue to work together to collectively use less than 950 million litres per day. This is to keep the dams and reservoirs fuller for longer. Cape Town’s latest dam levels stand at 89.4 percent. The city says permanent regulations limiting water use apply at all times.
# Maersk has suspended all transits through the Red Sea until further notice following an attack by Houthi rebels on one of its merchant ships. The Houthi rebels, expressing solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza conflict, have repeatedly targeted vessels in the vital Red Sea shipping lane. The Maersk Hangzhou, a Singapore-flagged, Denmark-owned, container vessel en route from Singapore to Port Suez in Egypt, was hit by a missile while traversing the Bab al-Mandab Strait. In response, Maersk will reroute vessels around the Cape of Good Hope.
# Cricket: The Proteas had the worst possible start to the second Test against India at Newlands in Cape Town. Stand-in captain Dean Elgar won the toss and elected to bat. The top four batters could not even get past scoring 5 runs each. Only Kyle Verreynne and David Bedingham could get to double figures. Mohammed Siraj was the main destroyer, claiming six wickets for just 15 runs. The Proteas were dismissed for 55 runs in the 24th over – not even batting till lunch on the first day of the Test.
# And, the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-72-cents and the euro at 20-rand-47-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-64-cents and Bitcoin trades at 45-thousand-116-dollars-20-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-and-54-dollars-59-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-43-cents a barrel.
