Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with a treat for the Rugby fans: It’s another action-packed weekend in the United Rugby Championship with home semifinals and playoff places at stake. Tonight at 8:35 the Sharks take on the Scarlets in Wales to kick off the action for the South African sides. The Bulls, who are currently fourth on the log, will have a tough task at Loftus against the Ospreys tomorrow at 3pm. The Lions face third-placed Munster in Johannesburg at 5pm. The sixth-placed Stormers need a win when they face the top team on the log, Leinster, just after 7pm in Cape Town.
# Soccer: Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City is within one point of leaders Arsenal with a game in hand, after defeating Brighton four-nil at the Amex Stadium. Goals from Kevin de Bruyne, two from Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez, ensured the victory and City is now unbeaten in 30 games in all competitions. Manager, Pep Guardiola, says he knows it’s all still to play for in the title race:
# Motorsport: Red Bull’s design chief Adrian Newey is reportedly set to leave the Formula One team after nearly two decades. Reportedly, the 65-year-old has been unsettled by team boss Christian Horner’s situation, who was accused of sexual harassment by a female employee. He was cleared of any wrongdoing following an internal investigation. Newey has overseen the design of cars that have taken Red Bull to all 13 of their world titles.
# Golf: England’s Rosie Davies and Switzerland’s Elena Moosmann share the lead on six-under-par 66 following the opening round of the South African Women’s Open in Cape Town. In solo third sits Norway’s Julie Boysen Hillestad on five-under. Lee-Anne Pace is the leading South African on four under as she continues her quest for a record sixth title. Davies says she is happy about how she has been playing recently:
Meanwhile, the 15-year-old son of major champion Tiger Woods, Charlie, carded an 81 to come up short in his bid to qualify for the US Open. Woods junior was among 84 entries in the local qualifier in Florida, where the top five advanced to 36-hole qualifying in June. He was among ten-thousand-and-84 golfers entering local qualifiers trying to gain one of 80 places in the field for the US Open at Pinehurst in June.
