In this bulletin:
# The DA criticises the ANC’s leave to appeal the cadre deployment contempt ruling
# Anglo American says BHP’s takeover proposal is opportunistic and highly unattractive
# And Golf: Tiger Woods’ son Charlie falls short again
# The DA has criticised the ANC’s decision to appeal the Gauteng High Court ruling, which found the party, its secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, and party official Thapelo Masilela in contempt of court. This is for unlawfully withholding records of its national cadre deployment committee in violation of an earlier order, which was upheld by the Constitutional Court. The DA’s Leon Schreiber says the ANC’s appeal shows it is terrified of the implications that would flow from revealing president Cyril Ramaphosa’s complicity in cadre deployment corruption:
# Anglo American has rejected global mining giant BHP’s proposed takeover offer, saying the opportunistic proposal significantly undervalues the company. The Australian mining giant has proposed an all-share takeover of Anglo-American that values it at about 740-billion-rand. The deal hinges on the demerger of Anglo American Platinum and Kumba Iron Ore. Anglo American chairperson, Stuart Chambers, says BHP’s proposal would be highly unattractive to its shareholders and create uncertainty and risk that would be carried by the company.
# Japan’s cabinet has approved legislation that would slap major fines on tech giants like Google or Apple if they block access to third-party smartphone apps and payment systems. Similar to the European Union’s new Digital Markets Act, behaviour deemed anti-competitive could see operators fined up to 20-percent of their revenues in Japan. Under the legislation set to be debated by lawmakers, they would also have to act fairly and make operating systems, browsers and search engines available for all.
# Golf: The 15-year-old son of major champion Tiger Woods, Charlie, carded an 81 to come up short in his bid to qualify for the US Open. Woods junior was among 84 entries in the local qualifier in Florida, where the top five advanced to 36-hole qualifying in June. He was among ten-thousand-and-84 golfers entering local qualifiers trying to gain one of 80 places in the field for the US Open at Pinehurst in June.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 19-rand-1-cent and the euro at 20-rand-41-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-79-cents and Bitcoin trades at 64-thousand-367-dollars-12-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-344-dollars-73-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 87-dollars-88-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Former Springbok captain and Cheetahs and Bulls hooker, Adriaan Strauss, has graduated with honours from the North-West University with a Master of Business Administration. He enrolled for his MBA at the university’s Business School in 2022. Strauss says he would not trade his journey into the world of academia for anything:
