# The DA says Public Enterprises minister, Pravin Gordhan, should not use taxpayer money to mount any legal action against Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, because he chose to keep details of the South African Airways and Takatso deal secret from the public. The DA’s Mimmy Gondwe says in a letter marked confidential and emailed to the Committee on Wednesday morning, Gordhan threatened that should the committee adopt and publish the report on the alleged irregularities in relation to the deal, the department will take the report on judicial review:
# Fifteen more arrests have been made in connection with the murder and attempted murder cases at the University of Fort Hare. This brings the number of arrests in this case to 25. The suspects were arrested in various provinces over the Easter weekend including Gauteng, the Eastern and Western Cape as well as KwaZulu-Natal. The fifteen suspects face a string of charges ranging from fraud, corruption, kidnapping, murder and attempted murder. They are expected to make their first court appearance tomorrow at the Dimbaza Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape:
# Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe is calling on those travelling long distances to rest sufficiently along the way. He says fatigue affects the quality of the decisions drivers make, and could result in accidents. Five-thousand-248 drivers were issued with summonses for various offenses since Thursday. Over 130 vehicles were also discontinued, with 119 impounded by traffic officers. Shongwe is calling on law enforcement officers to continue showing zero-tolerance to errant drivers and enforce the law without fear or favour.
# Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to “destroy” Hamas and press ahead with a ground offensive in Rafah as thousands of protesters called for his removal. The Israeli prime minister delivered a televised address to the nation on Sunday, saying he would do “everything” possible to secure the release of hostages abducted by Hamas. Netanyahu said his army would move civilians from Rafah before launching an offensive on the southern city. Several of Israel’s allies and humanitarian groups have warned that a ground offensive in Rafah would result in a human catastrophe.
# And finally cricket, the Lions eased to a nine-wicket win over the Rocks in their CSA T20 Challenge match at Boland Park in Paarl on Sunday. The Lions restricted the Rocks to 116 for eight after the home team won the toss and chose to bat first. In reply the Lions cruised to 120 for one in 17.2 overs. In Sunday’s other match at Boland Park, the Warriors demolished Western Province by nine wickets. In reply to the Western Province’s 142 for seven, the Warriors only needed 16.3 overs to reach their total of 145 for one.
