In this bulletin:
# Nomvalo alleges fake intelligence reports are behind his dismissal as MK’s secretary-general
# An aid convoy sets off for the Russian-held town of Oleshky in Ukraine
# And rugby: Some changes are made to the Springbok Women team for the second Test against Ireland
# Former MK Party secretary-general Sibonelo Nomvalo alleges his dismissal was orchestrated by an internal political cartel using fabricated intelligence reports. His removal shortly before next week’s local government elections comes amid reported factional tensions within the party. MK cited alleged unauthorised administrative decisions. Nomvalo told the media his letter to party president Jacob Zuma accused several senior figures of conspiring against him:
Meanwhile, anti-immigration organisation March and March’s national spokesperson, Sandile Dube, has urged South Africans to vote in large numbers in the elections. Speaking in Durban, Dube blamed government for public frustration, rejecting claims movement is responsible for protests. Dube calls for calm, urging voters to remove political parties that do not serve their interests. He says the movement is awaiting legal advice on its planned marches following court proceedings:
Moving abroad:
# An aid convoy started moving overnight towards the Russian-held town of Oleshky in southern Ukraine, carrying food and medical supplies among other items. Russian newspaper Izvestia reports the move follows weeks of efforts to organise a relief operation for residents of the acutely deprived town, seized by Russian forces soon after Moscow’s February 2022 invasion of its smaller neighbour. Reporters from countries such as France, Italy, Russia, Ukraine and the United States are accompanying the convoy.
# Rugby: Yonela Ngxingolo will start in the front row for the Springbok Women in place of the injured Sanelisiwe Charlie against Ireland in Cape Town tomorrow. The hostesses came up short 40-27 in last week’s first W-15 Global Series Test against the Irish. Other changes see Catha Jacobs moving from lock to flanker and Mary Zulu promoted off the bench to the number 10 jersey. Co-coach Laurian Johannes-Haupt says this should provide a better outcome:
And financial news: Gold prices have fallen below the four-thousand-dollar-an-ounce mark again as rising oil prices and stronger US inflation fuel expectations of further interest-rate hikes. Spot gold was 0.6-percent lower at three-thousand-997-dollar and 39-cents an ounce earlier today. KCM Trade chief market analyst Tim Waterer says investors have previously stepped in to buy gold when prices have fallen, helping to limit further losses. But he says it remains to be seen whether buyers will return this time.
The dollar currently trades at 16-rand-64-cents and the euro at 18-rand-64-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-35-cents and Bitcoin trades at 77-thousand-245-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-984-dollars-2-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 118-dollars-38-sents a barrel.
