# South African Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago says payment systems are essential economic infrastructure. Speaking at the Bank’s Payments Conference 2026, Kganyago outlined plans to modernise the system and make it safer, more efficient and inclusive. Priorities include opening access to non-bank providers, expanding PayShap, introducing standardised QR codes and developing a single digital identity for payments. He also revealed that the Bank is working to improve cross-border payments:
