# The City of Cape Town is urging residents to change how they support people living on the street by giving a hand-up, not a handout. Alex Swartz, who has lived experience of homelessness, ran the inaugural Nelson Mandela Marathon yesterday under the banner of Stride To Survive. Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says residents are encouraged to give responsibly by supporting interventions that provide coordinated, dignity-led and person-centred support to people experiencing homelessness:
