# The Institute of Race Relations says most South Africans reject claims of a white genocide in the country. Its March poll shows 72-percent disagreed with the claim, while 19-percent agreed. The survey also indicated 70-percent do not want government to use apartheid-era racial categories when deciding who gets jobs and business opportunities. The institute’s Hermann Pretorius says 89-percent believe people of different races need each other to make progress and should have equal opportunities.
# TLU SA says the agriculture and agro-processing master plan should be built on a stronger economic foundation before its implementation is accelerated. The agricultural organisation also wants clarity on how transformation will be incorporated in the plan without undermining the sustainability of the agricultural sector. General manager Bennie van Zyl says farming must remain profitable and sustainable, with investment, property rights and access to markets:
# Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni has been questioned before the Madlanga Commission over his remarks to president Cyril Ramaphosa and Mineral Resources minister Gwede Mantashe about “fighting for our own 30 percent” regarding PUTCO buses. He allegedly told them if they heard of interference with PUTCO, they should know that was them. Sibanyoni explained he was speaking on behalf of the KwaNdebele community during a community engagement with Ramaphosa:
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane says they will not take Eritrea lightly in their second Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Cairo, Egypt, this evening. South Africa kicked off their campaign by beating Guinea 2-1 this past weekend, while Eritrea snatched a point away from home after a 1-all draw with Kenya in the other Group D match. Mosimane has identified Egyptian-based Eritrean striker Ali Suleiman as the player to watch, saying he is fast, deadly on set pieces and shoots from any angle.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-37-cents and the euro at 18-rand-59-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-76-cents and Bitcoin trades at 83-thousand-718-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-184-dollars-20-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 101-dollars-57-cents a barrel.
# And finally: A shark of 3.5-metres trapped in a canal in the South Korean port city of Busan has attracted about 600-thousand visitors in two weeks. Nicknamed Bukangi, the bronze whaler was first spotted in the North Port waterway on September 18. Authorities tried to guide it back to the sea yesterday by using five vessels to spray jets of water behind it, but it repeatedly swam away. Another rescue attempt is planned later this week using a specially made net. Busan has even named Bukangi an honorary public relations ambassador.
