Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: Wallabies flanker Carlo Tizzano says facing the Springboks is the ultimate test, and they are ready for the challenge. Australia have included uncapped Harry McLaughlin-Phillips in the 34-man squad for Sunday’s one-off Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The Springboks beat Australia 30-12 during their last visit to the city in 2024. Tizzano says they will need to put on a better performance than they did against Argentina earlier this month:
Meanwhile, all team announcements in the United Rugby Championship will take place at three o’clock, South African time, on the Thursday of a match week for the duration of the season. During previous seasons, the announcements were normally made 24-hours before kick-off. The organisers say the trial follows media and broadcast partners’ feedback to allow them earlier access to team news, while the teams themselves are willing to help create a longer, more consistent build-up to matches. The season kicks off on Friday night.
# Cricket: Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad says Kagiso Rabada’s availability for the three-match Test series against Australia will depend on his progress through rehabilitation. The fast bowler suffered a hamstring injury during training last month. The injury has already ruled him out of this month’s one-day series against Australia. Conrad is pretty confident Rabada will feature in the Test series:
# Soccer: FIFA president Gianni Infantino is proposing an external review of how the governing body makes major decisions. This follows his failed plan to establish the FIFA Forward Enterprise, which would have involved selling stakes in the World Cup and other competitions to private investors. In a letter sent to all 211 FIFA member associations, Infantino says he is open to reform. He is inviting proposals on the role of the president, as well as practical ways to strengthen transparency and accountability.
# And motorsport: The F-I-A’s Formula One Commission has decided to shorten Grand Prix races next year, in line with power unit regulations to be introduced on fuel flow. Race distances will be reduced from 305- to 290-kilometres, a reduction of two to three laps depending on the circuit. The commission has also changed the rules on the fixed three-hour limitation of races impacted by rain interruptions, allowing greater flexibility to complete disrupted races. After a week off, F1 is back with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this weekend.
