# The Department of Basic Education says its 2026 Foundation Phase National Catalogue has been approved, clearing the way for provincial procurement. Spokesperson Terence Khala says the decision followed reviews by the Auditor-General, an independent investigation and legal experts, which found no fraud or favouritism. Khala says provinces have been engaged in procurement, with the department urging effective delivery before the new academic year:

# The South African Police Service is urging the public not to circulate photographs of people allegedly linked to the murders of women in the Ekurhuleni area. Police national spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says the SAPS has not issued any identikit, wanted poster or suspect photograph in connection with the cases. She emphasised that the SAPS is following every lead and will issue official updates when necessary:

# The Activists and Citizens Forum has welcomed the extension of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to January 25. Spokesperson Dennis Bloem says the Commission has exposed serious problems within the criminal justice system. Bloem commended commissioners, evidence leaders and investigators for tangible results, including suspensions, dismissals and arrests. He says the additional time must uncover the full extent of corruption and criminality:

# Greenland and Denmark say a new agreement with the United States will not compromise Greenland’s sovereignty, despite US President Donald Trump saying Washington will have permanent control over the island’s security. Reuters reports the deal is expected to allow a greater US military presence in Greenland, while keeping the territory under Danish sovereignty. Details of the agreement, including the scale of the US presence and any provisions on foreign policy or natural resources, have not been disclosed. It is expected to be formalised at the United Nations General Assembly.

# Cricket: The Proteas Women completed a five-nil T20 International series sweep over Zimbabwe after winning the final match by 13 runs in Bulawayo yesterday. South Africa posted 164 for six, with Kayla Reyneke unbeaten on 34 and Anneke Bosch making 33. Zimbabwe appeared to be in contention at 103 for two, but the Proteas bowlers struck regularly to restrict the hosts to 151 for eight. Nthabiseng Nini and Ayanda Hlubi each took three wickets. It was the first bilateral T20 series between the two countries.

And lastly more cricket, England returned to the top of the T20 rankings after completing a three-nil series sweep over Sri Lanka with an eight-wicket victory in Manchester. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 124, with Sonny Baker, Will Jacks and Jofra Archer taking two wickets each. England reached their target in under 10 overs, led by an unbeaten 62 from Jos Buttler. Harry Brook made 33 and was named player of the series. The victory was England’s 15th consecutive T20 win over Sri Lanka.
